Tidal power, sometimes called tidal energy, is a form of hydropower that converts the energy of tides into electricity or other useful forms of power.

Although not yet widely used, tidal power has potential for future electricity generation. Tides are more predictable than wind energy and solar power. Historically, tide mills have been used, both in Europe and on the Atlantic coast of the USA. The earliest occurrences date from the Middle Ages, or even from Roman times.

The world's first commercial tidal turbine has been installed in its home in Northern Ireland’s Strangford Lough.

In 2007 Strangford Lough became home to the birth of a new industry as the world's first commercial tidal power station was installed in the narrrows. The 1.2 megawatt underwater tidal electricity generator, part of Northern Ireland's Environment and Renewable Energy Fund scheme, takes advantage of the fast tidal flow in the lough which can be up to 4 m/s. Although the generator is powerful enough to power up to a thousand homes, the turbine has a minimal environmental impact, as it is almost entirely submerged, and the rotors turn slowly enough that they pose no danger to wildlife.

Commission supports tidal energy project

Nantucket's Planning & Economic Development Commission voted unanimously last week to support Edgartown's proposed tidal generation project between Muskeget and Martha's Vineyard.

Tidal Energy has a huge potential to provide long term, secure, low cost, supply of electricity. Especially for island coastal communities like Nantucket Island, Massachusetts. The local community has been split on it’s support of a wind farm in Nantucket Sound but appears to be very supportive of a Tidal Energy generation system.

The proposed installation would provide around 4.2 times the amount of energy flowing into Nantucket right now…very exciting!
